Wedding Weekend

Third Entry: The Wedding and New York

I had such a great time this past weekend, even thought it was exhausting. After 4 hours of sleep on Thursday night, we were on the bus and ready to go at 5:30 am. We didnt get to Skaneateles, New York until 6:30 their time (which is an hour ahead of us). At that point, we had been drinking for 4 hours.

After we checked into the hotel, we had 15 minutes to get ready for the evening. We got dressed and boarded the bus for dinner. We went into town (its SO small) and had a 3 hour dinner at one of the only restaurants. After dinner was over, I was so exhausted, but the groom invited us over to his in-laws to party, so off we went. We drank a lot at her parents house (with the entire wedding party and family members) and then went to the bar (there are only 2 in town).

It was SO different than the bars we go to. First off, because there is only 2 bars, everyone goes there. Its not just young people like it is in Broad Ripple. There were 60 year olds dancing on the bar. Oh, and everyone? Was wasted. This is a small, rich, Irish-Catholic town. At one point the jukebox was playing Neil Diamonds Sweet Caroline, which we all sang to (like everyone else in Indiana does). We all sang, Ba ba bah each time he sang Sweet Caroline does anyone else do this? Anyway, the entire bar thought we were so weird. But, there were over 20 of us Indiana people there, so we totally kicked ass.

After that, we went home and I slept until 8:30 am, which was so not enough sleep. The bus driver refused to drive us anywhere until the wedding (which was at 4) so we were stuck in the hotel until then (we were miles from the town center). We did walk next door to a drive in shack to eat lunch, but that was the extent of our day.

We got dressed and got on the bus to go to the wedding (as soon as I can find my USB cord I will post pictures). People were SO impressed with the bus. The wedding videographer was filming us getting off the bus. They had never seen anything like that in their town. People thought we were famous or something. Hilarious. And yes, the entire wedding (wedding party and guests) toured the bus during the reception.

The ceremony was gorgeous, the reception was magnificent. However, the best mans speech was SO embarrassing. At one point he referenced that Norm (the groom) had hooked up with every girl at table one (that was his Indiana friends table), and while its true, everyone turned around to look at us. Horrible.

The DJ had buck teeth and mullet and wore a black and white speckled vest (and he danced during the songs on the dance floor) which made me love him. He played New York and Indiana songs. The New Yorkers did this fun dance to the song New York New York. It involved a kick line and standing in a circle. The entire town new the dance it was almost like being in a musical. He also played John Mellencamp and Sweet Home Alabama which of course we all changed to Sweet Home Indiana.

After the wedding and reception, there was major drama (our bus driver was wasted and we had to ride with him anyway this town doesnt have cabs, or late night food, sadly), but then we sat in the parking lot of the hotel and finished off the beer. We went to bed, woke up early and drove back for 12 hours. I got home at 9:00 Sunday night and went straight to bed.

Several points of interest (or not, but I think so): I was crying on Friday night because I decided that I was in love with the groom, which is ridiculous. Weve been friends for almost 10 years. I dont fancy him, I was just drunk and feeling so emotional about the wedding.

Jeremy and I had our first slow dance. Sadly it was to Elton Johns Tiny Dancer.

Norms mom pulled me aside and told me how much her son loved me. That he was talking about me the other day and she was touched by how good of friends we are. That also made me cry (and yes, I was wasted). It was a completely open bar. Any thing you want did I mention that her parents are really wealthy?

The people from New York expected us to be hicks, which was so retarded. Just because youre from New York state (not city) does not mean you are automatically cooler than everyone. If you come from a city of less than 3,000 you are not going to be more sophisticated than people who come from a city of a couple million. They dont even have spas there they had to get their pedicures for the wedding at Wal-Mart! It just infuriates me when people like that assume that we are going to have southern accents and be all hick. On the bus we were joking about how we should black out some teeth and ask people where we could buy some corn.

It was such a great weekend though. Jeremy and snipped at each other a lot, but we drank for 20 hours and only got a total of 12 hours of sleep all 3 nights. Not too surprising.

And now I think Im all caught up. I just finished catching up on everyones diaries too. Its hard when youre gone for several days.

Thank you to everyone who left me notes. I appreciate the kind thoughts and prayers.
